It's not just the politicians that are disgusting in all of this terrible tragedy that has fallen on the survivors of the Gulf Coast. I recall hearing the mayor of New Orleans in his televised evacuation announcement asking the community to come together. He'd asked neighbors to look out for each other, help the elderly, and work together to save lives, get out before the storm hits. Following the devastation, the news reporters on the ground interviewed the stranded survivors who pleaded with neighbors packing their SUVs, leaving for safety, for help, for a ride. They were denied.
It begs the question: Who are you being? What do you really expect to take with you when you leave this earth? All of these material possessions and the life you so carefully guarded? No, I didn't think so.
I consistently remind myself and others, we are spiritual beings. We will return, our conciousness will return, to the very source from which we came. You will bring your memories, your relationships, the love you expressed, and all immaterial experiences with you. You won't bring your money, your car, your pets, and worldly possessions. They'll stay here and eventually turn to dust, just as the physical body you inhabit today. So why not develop more love and compassion? Why not equalize our living standards? Why not become more responsible in business? Why not distribute the wealth? Why not? There are so many why-nots.
Answer the call.

One only needs to make a call to a local news media, the Red Cross or Salvation Army too find a way to help. We need to focus on helping people right now and analyze the blame later.
If you both read what he's said carefully, you'd see that he is in fact compelling people to help by drawing our attention to those who shrink from offering help. Maybe a kick in the ass will get those who run from lending a hand to give a hand.
I agree, some really unattractive attributes are under the spotlight right now. All my friends in the UK are really disturbed and distressed by the stories we're hearing. I think the most shocking aspect is the gun-waving and threats from 'victims' in the New Orleans area. The political BS is just to be expected.
But I join with you in hoping that people will put all that aside and get into the spirit of community. I must also mention the very many wonderful stories I have heard - mainly fellow bloggers in the US who have become volunteer workers.
